National Hardware Show® to celebrate independent hardware retailers at the first-ever Independents’ Day

May 06, 2011

(Norwalk, CT, May 6, 2011) - For the first time ever, the National Hardware Show® in partnership with the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) will devote an entire day to independent retailers with a series of awards, giveaways, seminars and celebrations. "Independents' Day" will take place on and around the NRHA Village Stage in the main lobby on the final day of the 2011 National Hardware Show®, which will be held May 10-12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"Retailers and business owners are the backbone of our economy. They don't just run a business in their towns, they are involved in local politics, sponsor little league teams, serve on school boards and so much more," said Dan Tratensek, vp of publishing with the NRHA. "It is extremely gratifying to be able to take a whole day at the industry's largest show to cast a spotlight on these corporate heroes and recognize their commitment to their businesses and their communities."

The May 12 day-long celebration of independent home improvement retailers will get started with a panel discussion titled "Leading the Way: Local Business and its Value to the Economy." Held in a roundtable format, this event will feature influential proponents of the shop-local movement who will discuss the importance of local businesses and the impact these businesses have on the economy.

At 10 a.m., the NRHA will kick off an exciting new consumer marketing initiative called PlanItDIY, which is designed to promote independent home improvement retailers to consumers as "the places to shop" for home projects and advice. As part of the initiative, the NRHA will be unveiling the PlanItDIY.com website, which promotes traffic to independent home improvement retailers and provides consumers with practical how-to advice and tips.

"A new way to market" is the theme of the 2011 National Hardware Show® – the first to be held in conjunction with the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) All-Industry Convention. The Show features nine product categories: Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Living; Hardware & Tools; Homewares; Paint & Accessories; Plumbing & Electrical; Storage & Organization; and Tailgating/Outdoor Recreation; as well as core product categories being featured in the Show's International Sourcing area. Also featured during the three-day event are exciting special events, including product demonstrations, NRHA TV and informative addresses by industry experts.

Also premiering on Independents' Day are the Spirit of Independents' Awards (11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), through which the NRHA and National Hardware Show® will recognize independent home improvement retailers their efforts to improve their stores and their communities. In addition, the NRHA will be awarding two Hard-Earned Vacations for Hard-Working Retailers. Retailers must be registered for the NRHA All-Industry Convention and be present at the NRHA Village stage during the presentations (9:50 – to 10:00 a.m. and 10:50 – 11:00 a.m) to win. While these awards specifically honor retailers, NRHA welcomes all National Hardware Show attendees to join the festivities.

Immediately following the Spirit of Independents' Awards presentations, guests will be invited to head out to the Tailgate/Outdoor Recreation Area for an Independents' Day picnic lunch, with hot dogs, chips and soft drinks.

"I think it's great that the National Hardware Show and the NRHA would recognize all the hard work independent hardware retailers do all year," said Tom Ruedisueli, owner of Eymer Duchane Ace Hardware in Oscoda, Mich. "I'm looking forward to all the events on Independents' Day and the family atmosphere we're sure to feel during this special day."
