National Hardware Show® Will Play Host to Awards Programs

(NORWALK, Conn. April 30, 2014) — As the must-attend event for retailers, manufacturers, and others in the home improvement industry, the National Hardware Show®, which will be held May 6-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), is the perfect place to recognize excellence among members of that industry.

From progressive up-and-coming home improvement retailers to budding inventors, the awards programs held throughout the National Hardware Show will recognize a host of industry innovators.

Young Retailer of the Year Awards Ceremony

The Young Retailer of the Year Awards, presented by the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA), recognizes young, aspiring home improvement retailers, honors them for their outstanding achievements and encourages talented young people to pursue a career in the retail home improvement field. The program is now in its 18th year and, to date, has honored more than 100 young retailers.

“The Young Retailer of the Year event is one of the most inspiring events of the year,” says Bill Lee, president and CEO of NRHA. “It’s an evening filled with honor and excited as these young progressive entrepreneurs share their visions for shaping the industry.”

Packaging and Merchandising Awards

The Packaging and Merchandising Awards recognizes the industry’s best product packaging and merchandising. Attendees will get to see the best of the best in these areas, as well as hear a summary of the judges’ commentary and emerging packaging trends, when NRHA introduces this year’s winners.

The Packaging and Merchandising Awards offer manufacturers an opportunity for feedback on how to sell their products and make sure customers get the information they need about those products on the packages,” says Allison DeWitt, NRHA’s director of member services. “The National Hardware Show is the perfect place for retailers and manufacturers to meet and further discuss packaging and merchandising methods.”

30th Annual Golden Hammer Awards

The 30th annual Golden Hammer Awards, presented by Home Channel News magazine, will honor the industry’s movers and shakers across all channels from retailing to distribution. The awards will be presented in 30 categories to a list of vendors who have been selected by their industry peers.

This year, the ceremony will induct into the Home Channel Hall of Fame Ron Beal, president and CEO of Memphis-based Orgill. Also honored will be Stine Home & Yard, of Sulphur, La., this year’s Golden Hammer Retailer of the Year.

Additionally, Hipp Modern Builders Supply of Mountain View, Ark., a fourth-generation family business in the Ozark foothills, has been named the 2014 Tools of the Trade Award winner by Home Channel News.

Beal will join previous Golden Hammer Hall of Fame honorees Ray Griffith, Ace Hardware CEO (2013); Bob Taylor, Do it Best Corp. CEO (2012); Larry Stone of Lowe’s Cos. (2011) and Patt Farrah, a co-founder of The Home Depot (2010).

PDRA Scholarship Presentation

The Paint & Decorating Retailers Association (PDRA), a trade association serving independent paint and decorating product retailers, will award a $5,000 scholarship, which the National Hardware Show has sponsored for the past six years. Candidates must be nominated by a PDRA retail member and plan to use the scholarship toward vocation, college or post-college studies.

The scholarship, which is generously sponsored by the National Hardware Show, is a way for us to give back to our industry and our members,” says Dan Simon, PDRA vice president and publisher.

NRHA Top Gun Awards

This is the industry™s chance to hear what today’s top independent retailers are thinking. NRHA and Hardware Retailing magazine will once again assemble a panel of the industry’s most successful and innovative independent retailers to share their stories and thoughts on the industry.

Dan Tratensek, publisher of Hardware Retailing magazine, will moderate a panel that includes this year’s Top Gun class: Brent Burger of Campbell’s True Value, Joe Taylor of Taylor’s Do it Centers and Michael Wynn of Sunshine Ace Hardware.

Past Top Gun honorees have included Tim Buchheit of Buchheit Stores, Bruce Ellis of Builders Do it Center, Dennis Stine of Stine Home + Yard, George Preckwinkle of Bishop Ace Hardware, Rocco Falcone from Rocky’s Ace Hardware and Ron Cicunetti from Ron’s Home Hardware, among others.

The Made in the USA brand will be announcing the winners of the National Hardware Show All-American Awards, which will be given for products that are Made in the USA.

The Game Ball Awards, presented by Tailgater Magazine and John Lederer of the National Hardware Show, will be awarded for the most innovative products in the Outdoors, Tailgate & Recreation category.

NRHA Retailers™ Choice Awards

For decades, Hardware Retailing magazine has been recognizing exhibitors’ innovation and showcasing the best of the best products at the National Hardware Show with its Retailers’ Choice Awards.

Unlike other award programs, products selected to receive a Retailers’ Choice Award aren’t chosen by editors; they are selected by a panel of distinguished retailers who buy and sell products for a living. This program not only honors manufacturers for their innovation but also helps retailers single out new and innovative products to check out at the show.

“Retailers look forward to finding new products at the show and rewarding those that stand out from others as the most innovative,” says Dan Tratensek, publisher of Hardware Retailing magazine. “It also offers an opportunity to thank manufacturers—they’re the driving force behind these new products.”

Homewares Show® Awards

HomeWorld Business magazine and the National Hardware Show will be recognizing the best of the best in homewares product design and innovation. The winners for the Homewares Awards are selected by a distinguished panel of homewares retailers and represent the best-in-class product innovators within the industry.

Manufacturers from around the world submitted their products for consideration for this prestigious award. The 2013 gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention winners will be announced live at the show.

Awards will be presented by Peter Giannetti, HomeWorld Business magazine vice president and editor-in-chief. Judges for this show will include Terry and Deborah Shearer of The Organizing Store and Tony Luckie, executive director of Storage Sources Group, among others.

Lawn, Garden and Outdoor Living Innovation Awards

This awards program, sponsored by Casual Living, is back for the fourth year, and it’s focused on innovative new products in the growing lawn and garden and outdoor living categories. Winners are selected from thousands of products in these categories on display at the National Hardware Show. The presentation will be conducted by Doug Dauray, publisher of Casual Living, and Jamie Sorcher, senior editor of Casual Living. Products are voted on by a panel of industry judges, who include Joy Smith, merchandising manager/buyer at PRO Group and Rick Pontz, president of The Lawn & Garden-Performance Group. Awards are presented to gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention winners.

New Product Launch Awards

This awards program will showcase new products that haven’t yet hit the 2014 market and have no pre-negotiations or pre-sales. Browse the display area and view the winning products voted on by a panel of industry judges.

Awards will be presented by Kevin Weiss, CEO of Skymall, Inc. Judges include John Fischer, product manager with SkyMall, Inc.; Dave Christmas, president of Distribution America; and Jonathan Patterson, product manager with Handy Hardware Wholesale, Inc.; among others.
