AWARDS PROGRAMS TO HONOR PRODUCT INNOVATION DURING 2012 NATIONAL HARDWARE SHOW®

(NORWALK, Conn. April 12) - The National Hardware Show®, which will be held May 1-3 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, has long been known as THE place for the home improvement industry's manufacturers to unveil their latest products and innovations to the global marketplace. It only stands to reason that the show also serves as THE place for the industry to recognize manufacturers for their achievements.

At the 2012 National Hardware Show, several organizations will be hosting awards ceremonies to recognize the best of the best in product design, innovation and packaging across a range of product categories.

"New products are a vital part of keeping the industry moving forward and they are also a vital part of the offering at the National Hardware Show," says Sonya Ruff Jarvis, vice president of attendee programs for the National Hardware Show. "While it's always nice to see the industry's innovators get recognized for their hard work with awards, these kinds of award programs are also a vitally important part of the industry's channel partners communicating with one another."

Product-related awards programs scheduled to take place at the 2012 National Hardware Show include:

MAY 1

The NRHA Packaging & Merchandising Awards

NRHA Village Stage
This award program, conducted by the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA), recognizes the industry's finest product packaging and merchandising. "We thought it was vitally important for the industry's association of independent retailers to be able to provide the industry's manufacturers with feedback about the types of packaging and merchandising retailers need to help sell products and inform consumers about a product's features and benefits," says Scott Wright, NRHA's vice president of member services. "What better place to bring these two channel partners together than the National Hardware Show."

The Golden Hammer Awards presented by Home Channel News magazine

Once again Home Channel News magazine will honor the industry's movers and shakers with its Golden Hammer Awards. This year marks the 28th Golden Hammer Awards celebration. In addition to a group of the industry's leading manufacturers who will be honored at the ceremony, this year's Golden Hammer Home Channel Hall of Fame honoree will be Bob Taylor, Do it Best. The team from Aubuchon Hardware will be recognized as the Home Channel News Retailer of the Year. Additionally, attendees for the Golden Hammer Awards will also be able to sit in on a retail panel discussion titled "The Recovery: Is it Real? And what to do about it!"

6th Annual Homewares Awards presented by Homeworld Business magazine and the National Hardware Show

For the sixth year in a row, Homeworld Business magazine and the National Hardware Show will be recognizing the best of the best in homewares product design and innovation. "We are certainly of the opinion that innovative, new products continue to be the lifeblood of new opportunities at retail," Homeworld Business editor-in-chief Peter Giannetti says. "The National Hardware Show shares Homeworld Business' commitment to helping retailers identify these new products and new opportunities."

Lawn & Garden and Outdoor Living Innovation Awards presented by Casual Living magazine and the National Hardware Show

This awards program is back for its second year and recognizes innovative product design with the growing lawn and garden and outdoor living categories. At the inaugural awards presentation in 2011, manufacturers indicated that the recognition helped drive awareness about their products and traffic at their booths during the remainder of the show. "We (saw) some big buying groups that showed interest (in our product) that we haven't talked to before," Aaron Gharst of The Original Umbrella Stand says. "They say they saw our product at the innovations area and wanted to come by our booth to learn more about it for their market. We would have never been able to get that kind of time with them if we had just called on them. This was great."

New Product Launch/Inventor's Spotlight Awards presented by the United Inventors Association and the National Hardware Show 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm NRHA Village Stage Innovation and new ideas are both huge parts of the National Hardware Show. This year, the show will cast a special spotlight on never-before-seen products in its Inventor's Spotlight area. This area will be part of the show's Innovation Station, which is completely dedicated to new products and ideas. In addition to the exhibiting opportunities within the Innovation Station, the United Inventors Association and the National Hardware Show will also present awards to some of the products from this area including recognition for Best Market Research, Best Product Concept and Best Overall Product. "Besides the honor of being selected, winning an award can be a great opportunity for the recipient to generate some additional PR for themselves and their product," UIA director of inventor education and events Jen Lawlor says.

Hardware Retailing magazine's Retailers' Choice Awards

For more than four decades, Hardware Retailing magazine has been honoring exhibitors at the National Hardware Show for their innovation and excellence with its Retailers' Choice Awards. These awards are given to specific products on display at the National Hardware Show that are unique, innovative and offer great potential for sales at retail. Winners are chosen by a panel of home improvement retailers. "This is just another example of retailers who are eager to find and stock innovative merchandise wanting to provide feedback and show their appreciation to the manufacturers who are driving and developing these types of items," Wright says.

Pitch Tank Awards

The Pitch Tank will make its debut at the 2012 National Hardware Show as part of the new Innovation Station area, dedicated to showcasing new home improvement products, ideas and inventions. The Pitch Tank was created to allow everyday entrepreneurs and inventors a chance to give their "pitches," or presentations, to a seasoned team of product development executives and marketers, led by well-known entrepreneur Kevin Harrington, who also appears as one of the "sharks" on TV's popular "Shark Tank." Select products from the Pitch Tank will be recognized during a special presentation on the NRHA Village Stage. "(The National Hardware Show) is a great venue for Pitch Tank because hardware products have proven to be very successful in direct-response television, live shopping and retail," Harrington says. "The products in hardware tend to be visual, demonstrable and problem solving, three very important features of direct response products. In giving tribute to Billy Mays, one of the greatest hardware guys of all time, the last infomercial he did was actually for a hardware product, the Dual Saw."
