$100,000 Giveaway

What would you do if you were given $100,000 to invest in your business? On Wednesday, one lucky independent retailer will be awarded that grand prize.

It’s all part of the Reimagine Retail program, which is new this year and sponsored by the National Hardware Show. Independent retailers had the opportunity to submit a 500-word description of the project they would complete toward the future of their business, with entries geared toward store design, technology, employees and products.

The winner will be announced at 2 p.m. on Wednesday on the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) Village Stage, located in the main lobby outside Central Hall.

Don’t Miss All of the New Products

One of the most popular reasons to visit the National Hardware Show is to see the variety of new products available. There’s no shortage of areas to find them. Make sure to check out the following:
  • New Product World offers the latest in innovations, products and trends across all product categories. It's located on Level 2 in Meeting Room N245.
  • New Product Launch, located in the Central Lobby, is full of products that haven't hit the market yet. There are no pre-negotiations or pre-sales, and products found here represent a variety of categories.
  • Inventors Spotlight, located in Room N109, highlights products that could be “the next big thing” in the industry. It’s sponsored by the United Hardware Association and includes educational opportunities and the chance for inventors to pitch their products to expert panels. UIA Inventors Spotlight Awards include the following: Most Innovative Concept, Best Marketing Effort and The Pinnacle Award (Best in Show).

Location, Location, Location

The National Hardware Show is spread out across the Central and North Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center and even extends outside.

In the Central Hall are the Hardware & Tools, Plumbing & Electrical and Homewares categories, as well as the International Sourcing area and the PDRA Paint & Accessories area.

In the North Hall is the Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Living area, which includes Farm & Ranch and Pet Products.

The Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ area is located outdoors, in the Silver Parking Lot.

Other Exhibitors

Take some time to visit the more than 2,600 exhibitors who will be at the Show. Vendors of all sizes are in attendance, including well-known brands and brand-new companies.

There’s plenty to see beyond the convention center, too. The Lancaster Buying Show will once again be co-located with the National Hardware Show. Lancaster, a leading paint sundries distributor, will hold its buying show at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11.

To learn more about what’s happening in the industry and how you can build upon your business’ success, visit the NRHA Village for a variety of free seminars from experts in the industry.

These seminars will cover topics such as understanding consumers and how they shop, the importance of a strong in-store experience, providing winning customer service and more.

Reimagine Retail Finalists Gather for Grand Prize
Winner Announcement

The National Hardware Show® has upped the ante at its 72nd annual event with the Reimagine Retail program. Independent home improvement retailers were asked to submit an essay detailing how they would spend $100,000 on a business improvement project. Retailers could also submit photos and/or videos.

Projects could focus on one of four key categories:
  • Store design
  • Technology
  • Employees
  • Products
Some of the potential project ideas include updated merchandising solutions, flooring, paint and decoration, inventory management systems, point-of-sale solutions, investing in employee training, retaining or recruitment programs, or advertising and public relations programs.

A panel of industry judges that included representatives from the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) and its Retail Leadership Institute reviewed entries from the 10 finalists and awarded points based on six categories, including:
  • Innovation: Did the project propose something new for the industry?
  • Potential return on investment: What is the tangible ROI for this project?
  • Overall impact on the business: What impact, financial and nonfinancial, might this project have on the business?
  • Plan for execution: Is the outline plan for completion timely, efficient and cost-effective?
  • Impact on customers/community: What kind of effect will this project have on the store's customers and community?
  • Overall presentation: Is the concept well thought out and presented clearly?
Below are five of the 10 finalists. Learn more about the other five finalists tomorrow. The grand prize winner will be announced at 2 p.m. Wednesday on the NRHA Village Stage.

About the Finalists

Ten independent hardware store retailers made their way into the coveted finalist positions for the Reimagine Retail contest. Here is an overview of the first five finalists; read tomorrow's Show Daily to see the next five. You can attend the ceremony Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the NRHA Village to celebrate the winner and learn more about the finalists and their ideas.

Woods Hardware - Cincinnati, Ohio
Woods Hardware plans to use the prize money to meet customers’ needs before they ever make it to the store. The team virtualized a 3-D image of their store and wants to be a leader in omnichannel retailing with the next step. Using meta tags, how-to videos and e-commerce within the program, the virtual hardware store will take customers right to each product and provide a total cost estimate before they visit the store.

Logan Hardware - Washington, D.C.
How much business does your in-store service lose because your customers can’t find time to bring the project to you? The answer, according to Logan Hardware, is mobile window-screen repair. They will use the Reimagine Retail prize money to develop an app that will connect customers to screen repair services that come to them. This could be expanded to other services as well.

K Hardware Stores - Idaho Falls, Idaho
If you’ve ever needed a part or a product in the middle of a project, but didn’t want to stop to run to the store, K Hardware Stores wants to build a solution that fits in the palm of your hand. Instead of asking someone else to run out for the product and risk them buying the wrong item, they envision an app that allows customers to preorder the correct item and get curbside pickup when they arrive at the store.

Sandpoint Super Drug - Sandpoint, Idaho
Sandpoint Super Drug is well known in its community for being the go-to pharmacy and is planning to revitalize the hardware side of its business by improving communication options for customers. They were inspired to create a customer consultation center that will allow customers to contact store representatives through many digital platforms, including social media and live chat.

Mark's Supply - Frackville and Shenandoah, Pennsylvania
Mark’s Supply cares about its community and wants to give back. The prize money will be used to update the storefront and invest in renewable energy solutions for the store. In addition, they will build an outdoor pavilion where farmers and crafters can sell their goods. They expect this space to increase foot traffic and inspire other retailers and entrepreneurs to enter the empty storefronts in the area.

Meet Your Match With NHS's Match Me Program

With more than 2,600 exhibitors at the National Hardware Show®, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the options, products and demonstrations. Let the Show team help you out with its Match Me program.

Industry Edge: 5 Product Trends in Outdoor Living

According to online home improvement community Houzz.com, the current top three uses for outdoor home spaces are gardening, entertaining and spending time with family. Below are a few spring and summer trends in outdoor living that reflect these popular activities.

Going Native

While flowering and low-maintenance plantings remain a significant portion of sales, both native plants and plants that attract beneficial insects, bees, and birds, are trending, especially as more environmentally conscious millennials purchase homes. For information on the types of plants that are native to your region, check with local universities, the forestry extension office or the U.S. Department of Agriculture (plants.usda.gov/java).

Mixing It Up

The use of mixed materials (such as wood and metal combination pieces) and reclaimed items in landscaping projects and outdoor features continues to garner interest. For DIYers, the use of reclaimed pallets to create everything from furniture to garden boxes remains strong, but with a bit of a twist that includes a secondary growing trend: paint washes. Color-washed wood (whether reclaimed or new), is gaining in popularity for its visual interest, as well as the ability to add some personalization to landscaping.

Designating Entertainment Spaces

Creating interior-like entertaining spaces in the backyard remains a popular trend, but consumers and landscape designers are taking it to the next level this year by designating specific entertainment zones, such as outdoor kitchens, dining zones, relaxation areas complete with retractable movie screens or fire pits and zones for activities like bocce ball or other outdoor games. Going along with this trend, homeowners are opting to add structures like pergolas or privacy screening (using varied board widths for visual interest) to delineate the zones.

Tiling Decks

While wood and composite decks have been the go-to for many homeowners, 2017 may see an increase in the use of tile for outdoor entertaining spaces. Consumers are continuing the trend of creating exterior “rooms” that flow seamlessly or coordinate with their homes’ interiors, and are thereby opting to use materials such as porcelain tiles for decks and patios. Products like the Outdoor Flooring System™ by Gratedex (gratedex.com), can make the process of installing or replacing tiled decks easier, and with fewer steps than traditional installations.

Getting Out to Play

As more consumers spend quality outdoor time with friends and family, more products, from relaxing games that can be played while holding a conversation (or an icy beverage), to more competitive pursuits, are coming on the market. Some examples include the Giant 4-in-a-Row game by GoSports (pandpimports.com), the KanJam Illuminate Disc Game
(kanjam.com) and Spikeball (spikeball.com; booth #Outdr232).

Look for these trends and more throughout the Show floor in the North Hall and outdoors in Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ.

Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ Offers Fun in the Sun

Every year, attendees of the National Hardware Show® gather in Las Vegas to explore the latest products within a wide variety of home improvement categories. One area that continues to grow in popularity is the focus on tailgate, outdoor living and barbecue, so it’s no surprise the outdoor area is a favorite spot at the Show.

The Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ area is located in the Silver Parking Lot in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center. For attendees looking to get some fresh air and find some fun products, this is the area to visit.

In years past, this area primarily consisted of tailgating products, but as the consumer interest in outdoor living has increased, it’s grown to include backyard and barbecue products.

Now, anyone walking through Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ will discover lawn, garden and outdoor living products shown in a real-life, outdoor setup. In addition to seeing hundreds of exhibitors, Show attendees will also want to head to this area to attend fun events and award ceremonies.

Tomorrow from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. is the Retailer Happy Hour, held in the Silver Lot and hosted by Traeger Grills. Retailers are invited to enjoy free drinks and mingle with their peers.

And Wednesday, all Show attendees are invited to the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ Party, which will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both exhibitors and attendees are invited to the party, which is luau-themed and will feature live entertainment from The Morrison Brothers Band and free food and drinks.

Before the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ Party starts on Wednesday, there are two different awards.

The Game Ball Awards are sponsored by Tailgater Magazine and will be presented at 4 p.m. Wednesday on the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ Stage.

These awards will identify the best in class in the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ product categories. Some of the awards that will be presented include Best New Product Overall, Best New Product Outdoor Grilling or Concept, Best Tailgate Themed Booth Set Up & Enthusiasm, Best Outdoor Furniture Product and Most Unique Product.

50 Campfires is hosting its Camping Authority Awards at 4 p.m. tomorrow on the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ Stage.

The team from 50 Campfires will announce awards that include the National Hardware Show’s Best New Products, Best Tech, Essential Gear and Editors’ Choice Awards.

The representatives from 50 Campfires will also spend time reviewing and vetting products based on their subscribers’ needs, trends and more.

New Products a Staple of the National Hardware Show®

New products featured throughout the Las Vegas Convention Center are some of the biggest draws for both vendors showcasing their latest inventions and retailers seeking out the coolest new products to add to their inventory.

While you’re sure to discover new products wherever you turn, there are several areas devoted specifically to these products that you won’t want to miss.

Start at the Featured Product Gallery in Meeting Room N245 for the opportunity to see a wide range of these products.

In this area, you will discover New Product World; the Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Recovery Product Display; the Energy Efficient and Eco-Friendly Product Displays; the Homewares Awards Product Display; and the Lawn, Garden & Outdoor Living Awards Product Display.

If you’re eager to see products that have yet to hit the market and get an inside scoop on the next biggest product or service in the industry, head to Inventors Spotlight, located in Meeting Room N109.

Two other product-heavy areas will have a spotlight in the Central Lobby, which includes the New Product Launch and the Made in USA Product Showcase.

The New Product Launch will highlight products that have yet to hit the market in a variety of categories. The winning products, voted on by a panel of industry judges, will be announced at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 11.

In addition to browsing these featured areas, you can track down new exhibitors in the NHS Mobile App, where there’s a section dedicated to new exhibitors only.

If you’re eager to discover some products recommended by the retailers who sell them every day, then you won’t want to miss the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) Retailers’ Choice Awards, which will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the NRHA Village Stage. A panel of independent home improvement retailers will reveal their favorite products they discovered while browsing booths all across the Show floor.

With many areas and events featuring the hottest products today and in the future highlighted at the three-day Show, there’s no shortage of opportunities to discover new products.

American Pride on Display at National Hardware Show®

As the National Hardware Show® kicks in to gear, attendees are sure to find a wide variety of Made in the USA products, and American-based manufacturers can showcase their high-quality goods.

To see all of these U.S.-made products, which continue to be popular with retailers and their customers, head to the Made in USA area of the Show floor, which is located in the Central Lobby. Here, you will discover products made exclusively in the USA.

Several exhibitors to the Show will have a strong presence as a Made in USA vendor, including Adams Manufacturing and Bloem.

Adams Manufacturing will be displaying a wide array of the company’s American-made outdoor resin furniture.

Bloem, a manufacturer of high-quality plastic planters and garden accessories, will be on hand with a colorful, wide selection of products. Keep an eye out for the resin planters and planter bags.

There are plenty of exhibitors across all categories that manufacture products made in the U.S., and they can be found throughout the Show floor. Use the NHS Mobile App to find these highly popular products and learn more from the vendors that sell them.

To celebrate and honor the manufacturers that produce their products in the U.S., attend the American Manufacturing Awards at 3 p.m. Wednesday on the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) Village Stage. The best products from this area will be judged in American manufacturing excellence in design, quality and innovation.

Plenty of Awards Ceremonies to See at the Show

The National Hardware Show® is the perfect opportunity to recognize retailers, manufacturers and vendors for their excellence in and contributions to the industry. There are a variety of awards ceremonies that take place throughout the Show.

The first happens tonight, when the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) honors its Young Retailer of the Year honorees at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel. Learn more about these honorees tomorrow in the Show Daily.

Tomorrow, the awards continue with NRHA’s Packaging and Merchandising Awards, which honors manufacturers who have created innovative packaging for their products, as well as other merchandising aids to help independent hardware stores, home centers and lumberyards sell more products in their stores.

Winners are recognized with a Whole Package, Gold or Silver Award, an Honorable Mention or Judges’ Choice Award. The awards will be presented at 2 p.m. tomorrow on the NRHA Village Stage.

Awards ceremonies will continue throughout the Show. Stay tuned to tomorrow's issue of the Show Daily to learn more about additional award presentations.

Consumer Psychologist Explores the 'New Consumer Mind' in First Keynote of NRHA Conference

The North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) All-Industry Conference kicks off with keynote speaker Kit Yarrow, Ph.D., a psychologist, professor, consultant and author of “Decoding the New Consumer Mind: How and Why We Shop and Buy.” Yarrow will deliver her presentation of the same name tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. on the NRHA Village Stage.

Yarrow delves into the world of consumer behavior in her presentation, drawing on decades of experience. Her presentation will supply retailers with resources they can take back to their stores so they can more successfully connect with and market to customers.

“This presentation will give retailers the tools they need to understand how their customers shop and to use that information to more successfully connect with them,” says NRHA executive vice president and Hardware Retailing publisher Dan Tratensek.

Yarrow will use case studies, videos, humor and insights from her own award-winning research. The presentation will offer six core sociocultural shifts that led to permanent changes in the psychology of consumers. In addition, Yarrow will discuss the eight ways consumers shop, decide and are motivated to buy differently than they were just a decade ago. Finally, Yarrow will offer independent home improvement retailers eight strategic ways to tap into today’s new consumer psychology.

Customer service is integral to Wednesday’s keynote as well, when leadership coach and retail expert Mary Walter takes the stage. Walter will deliver her keynote presentation “Your Remarkable Service Advantage” at 10 a.m. Wednesday on the NRHA Village Stage, which will prepare retailers to deliver winning service and discover what truly drives business from a service perspective.

Plan for the Future at the NRHA All-Industry Conference

Forward-Thinking Retail is this year’s theme for the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) All-Industry Conference, held in conjunction with the National Hardware Show®. The conference is free for all attendees of the National Hardware Show and offers endless opportunities to independent home improvement retailers who are looking for educational sessions, a place to network with other retailers and even more chances to see new products. The conference takes place in the NRHA Village, which is located in the main lobby outside the Central Hall. The NRHA Village is where independent retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and industry professionals can gather in one place to engage with each other and with NRHA.

Plan ahead to be sure you see everything happening in the NRHA Village during the conference, so you can leave Las Vegas with the tools you need to plan for success in your business.

Learn Something New

NRHA has put together a full lineup of industry speakers who will discuss everything from really getting to know your customers to how to differentiate your brick-and-mortar operation in an e-commerce world.

Starting the day off tomorrow is retail consultant and motivational speaker Dustin Kaehr, who will deliver his presentation, “Customers Uncensored: What They Wish You Knew.” Kaehr’s presentation will discuss the honest truth about what customers say when retailers aren’t around and how retailers can exceed their customers’ expectations at every turn.

The keynote for tomorrow is from Kit Yarrow, Ph.D., whose presentation “Decoding the New Consumer Mind” uses her expertise to determine the psychology of modern consumers, helping retailers more effectively and more accurately connect with consumers and predict their future moves. Yarrow will explain sociocultural shifts that have changed how consumers think; introduce eight ways consumers shop, make decisions and are motivated to buy differently today; and present eight strategic recommendations for retailers to take on this new kind of consumer.

NRHA and Independent We Stand teamed up on this year’s Home Sweet Home Study, which focuses on the pro customer segment and evaluates how much money stays in a community when the pros shop locally. This presentation will show retailers how to send this message to their customers.

After lunch, return to the NRHA Village for even more valuable educational programming. Al Meyers from retail innovation firm Kalypso will deliver his presentation “Break Out of the Pack” that discusses the different approaches high-performance retailers are using to innovate—and stay afloat—in today’s tough retail environment.

NRHA will introduce the winners of the 2017 Packaging and Merchandising Awards tomorrow afternoon, sharing a summary of judge commentary and emerging packaging trends. Attendees will get to see the best of the best in home improvement packaging and merchandising.

Will Aubuchon from Aubuchon Hardware, the largest independent home improvement retailer in the U.S., will also take the stage to talk about his company’s omnichannel initiative Aubuchon Go, which will seamlessly blend customers’ experiences with Aubuchon, both in the store and online.

General Electric lighting experts will deliver the presentation “Lighting: The Smart Home Conduit,” sharing more on how lighting is opening a channel to simple smart home adoption and interoperability with a new generation of efficient lighting that listens, learns and sees.

Spend Time With Your Association

Throughout the conference, NRHA encourages you to engage with association staff and members to learn something new about what NRHA can do for your business.

For the first day of the conference, challenge yourself to meet someone new. Join other retailers and NRHA staff in the NRHA Village tomorrow evening for the Independent Retailer Reception. This event presents a casual opportunity for independent hardware store, home center and lumberyard retailers to network with each other after the Show floor has closed for the day.

Plan for Tomorrow

There is more activity in the NRHA Village on Wednesday. Plan to attend a second keynote presentation highlighting customer service, see the twist to this year’s Top Guns presentation, celebrate the winner of the Reimagine Retail program and more. See the full schedule in your conference program to ensure you’re at the right place at the right time.
