National Hardware Show® Comes to a Close

Today marked the final day of the most exciting hardware industry event—the National Hardware Show®. Industry leaders, manufacturers and retailers spent the past three days on the hunt for new products, attending educational seminars and connecting with peers.

The Show began Tuesday and ended today at the Las Vegas Convention Center and it featured thousands of exhibitors and attracted more than 20,000 attendees.

This year, one independent retailer walked home from the Show with more than just great ideas, but also $100,000 from winning the Reimagine Retail program, which is sponsored by the National Hardware Show®. Caribou Jack's Trading Co. in Soda Springs, Idaho, was announced as the winner of the program on Wednesday. Owner Robert Lau and his staff will use the money to build an in-store cafe, where they can host grilling and cooking events and provide a space for members of the community to use at no charge.

The Show co-located with the Lancaster Buying Show to offer a wide assortment of products from the paint and paint sundries category. Additionally, the Show partnered with the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA), the association presenting its All-Industry Conference at the NRHA Village. The conference offered seminars on topics such as understanding the mind of consumers to helping retailers discover how they can set themselves apart through strong and personalized customer services.

Many companies and retailers were honored at the Show, presented with awards recognizing innovation, business acumen and retailing vision. The awards included the Industry’s Top Gun Awards program, where NRHA presented the Young Guns award to recognize the work of four of the industry’s best independent home improvement retailers.

The Show offered fun, too—attendees enjoyed food fresh off the grills in the Tailgate, Backyard & BBQ area, and even had the chance to hang out at the luau party in the Silver Parking Lot on Wednesday.

Last Chance Look: Show Watchers Weigh In

This morning, representatives from the North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) gathered at the NRHA Village Stage to share their thoughts on this year’s National Hardware Show® and provided attendees suggestions on favorite products to search before the Show came to a close.

"This was my first time attending the National Hardware Show, and it was my first time coming to Las Vegas,” says Katie McHone-Jones, event manager and retail support at NRHA. “From an event standpoint, it was truly amazing to see how well the entire event was put together. Seeing all the vendor booths and walking the floor, I know it took a lot of planning and prepapring. It's been a great experience and I can't wait to return in the future!”

Dan Tratensek, publisher of Hardware Retailing magazine, led the discussion with panel members that included NRHA staffers and guests, which included McHone-Jones, Renee Changnon, Deanna Tratensek and Whitney Daulton.

According to Deanna Tratensek, attending the Show is something she enjoys because she is able to discover products she would want to have in her own home. Plus, she says coming to the Show each year is like a fun reunion, where she gets to connect with friends she doesn't seefrequently.

All four panelists touched on a few different things that truly made the Show memorable for them. Whether it was listening to keynote speaker Kit Yarrow share insights on the consumer mind, trying tasty food in the Tailgate, Outdoor & BBQ area or attending award ceremonies, like the Young Retailer of the Year and Top Gun awards.

“The Young Retailer of the Year ceremony was my favorite event to attend,” says Daulton. “It's always so inspirational to see the great things that young retailers are accomplishing in this industry.”

PDRA Awards Ninth Annual Scholarship

The Paint and Decorating Retailers Association (PDRA) awarded its ninth annual $5,000 academic scholarship yesterday. The award was presented on the NRHA Village Stage in the NRHA Village, located in the main lobby.

The annual scholarship is presented to a high school senior or college student. Eligible students are nominated by PDRA members in good standing.

“The PDRA scholarship is a way for our organization to support the academic and career goals of young people,” says PDRA executive director LeAnn Day. “We are encouraged by the determination of the nominees each year, and we look forward to honoring the ninth annual scholarship winner on stage this afternoon.”

This year’s winner is Jennifer Fick, a junior at Missouri State University and color consultant at Seminole Design Center in Seminole, Missouri. Store owner Dan Rosebrough told Fick about the scholarship opportunity, and she jumped at the chance to apply.

“Scholarships are hard to come by, so when you find that opportunity, you definitely want to take it,” says Fick.

Fick plans to use the scholarship award toward an internship with Seminole Design Center, where she will have an opportunity to spend more time working with her established client base.

“This job has given me so much knowledge, and it is a fabulous opportunity to help troubleshoot with my clients and help them find that perfect color and product,” she says.
